Prof. Vijayakumar “Kumar” Bhagavatula has served as a faculty member in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at CMU since 1982. He is the Director of Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) and the U.A. & Helen Whitaker Professor of ECE. Prior to joining CMU-Africa, Prof. Kumar has served as the Interim Vice Provost for Research, as well as an Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at CMU. Prof. Kumar's research interests include Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Coding and Signal Processing for Data Storage Systems. He has authored or co-authored over 600 technical papers, twenty book chapters, 12 patents and one book entitled Correlation Pattern Recognition. In 2003, Prof. Kumar received the Eta Kappa Nu award for Excellence in Teaching in the ECE Department at CMU and the Carnegie Institute of Technology’s Dowd Fellowship for educational contributions and he was a co-recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Faculty Research Award in CMU’s College of Engineering. He served as an Editor for Applied Optics and as an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. Information Forensics and Security. Prof. Kumar is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE), SPIE, Optical Society of America(OSA), the International Association of Pattern Recognition(IAPR), the American Association for Advancement of Science(AAAS) and the National Academy of Inventors(NAI).
