The CMU-Africa Certificate in Artificial Intelligence for Africa is a six-course online program designed for learners interested in building AI applications relevant to the African context. Hands-on exercises using industry-standard tools empower learners with the competency and confidence to thrive in the continent's competitive markets. The certificate program is cost-free for qualified applicants.
Applications and recommendations will be accepted from October 15-November 15, 2026
Learners will gain the skills to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of the purpose, capabilities, and limitations of AI tools and techniques
- Apply foundational analytical and technical skills for AI-driven solutions in Africa
- Develop AI models and solutions using current tools, frameworks, and best practices
- Design real-world challenges into data-driven AI solutions that are effective, relevant, and deployable
- Determine the impact of AI solutions, using appropriate metrics, validation techniques, and critical thinking
Career pathways
The certificate supports early-career learners seeking internships and entry-level roles, while strengthening the capabilities of mid-career technical professionals, to pursue opportunities in areas such as:
- Machine learning applications
- AI application development
- AI product support
- AI research and innovation
- Related AI fields
Structure
The certificate has six courses with 14 or 15 lessons in each course. The lessons are designed to be completed by qualified learners in approximately three hours each, giving a total time of approximately 45 hours to complete each course. Learners should plan to spend at least five-six hours per week to complete the courses at the expected pace.
The certificate is not for university credit. Learners earn digital badges for each course and a sharable, verifiable certificate for completing all six courses.

Prerequisites
The program is designed for a diverse range of learners looking to advance their careers or enhance their skills in artificial intelligence. Whether you're an undergraduate student or a professional adapting to a changing market, the courses are designed to support your goals.
Successful candidates for the program must have basic knowledge of linear algebra, probability and statistics, and computer programming and access to a laptop or desktop computer and a reliable internet connection.
